Video-test: La Sportiva Akasha Trail Running Shoe

The Akasha, with added comfort and a better fit, is one of the top long distance trail running shoes on the market.

The Akasha is a new trail running shoe from La Sportiva that has been designed with comfort and running long distances in mind. With an increased amount of materials in the sole and a wider base than other models from La Sportiva, the Akasha is more stable and cushioned, especially in the heel.

The finished product is a high quality shoe. One thing you will notice is that, in terms of adjustments, La Sportiva has used technologies that worked well in the Bushido and Ultra Raptor models, including the sole, so the improvements and innovations have more to do with the overall design and benefits of the Akasha, rather than with the materials used in its construction.

As mentioned, the Akasha is wider than typical La Sportiva shoe, but it is also built with a wrap-around upper, which provides for a secure fit throughout the foot. It has a ton of cushioning, which make them ideal for long distances and are still lightweight despite the volume of the midsole. However, while it provides lightweight, flexible security, it offers slightly less protection (especially in the toecap) than the Ultra Raptor model, the other long distance shoe from La Sportiva.

We could say that the Akasha is a mix between the minimalism of the Bushido model (which is for short and medium, technical runs) and the technical aggressiveness with solid protection of the Ultra Raptor. In between those models we can find the Akasha, which results in a very comfortable and lightweight shoe, designed for terrain of medium difficulty and all-around use.

At the same time, this comfort does not affect the shoe's technicality. Therefore, there will be many runners who after trying out the Akasha, will prefer it for all types of technical terrain. Regarding its protection, the high amount of cushioning more than makes up for the less aggressive toecap. All in all, La Sportiva deserves a lot of credit if their goal was to create a comfortable, secure shoe for long distance training and ultra-marathons, as that is where it shines in its design.
